My car was recently totaled and the insurance company offered an estimate far below what I paid. What can I do?

What you paid does not come into it. No ins company uses KBB. The NADA you look up is a national average (they took your zip code to track usage, not to give a more accurate value) What you paid is between you and the dealer. It may reflect a difficulty in obtaining financing, dealers that sell to such customers tend to charge much more than the vehicle is worth. Otherwise, you were had. Where I see KBB used most often is by dealers to convince people to pay more. When I call dealers to ask what the value of a car actually is, something I do frequently, they almost universally reference NADA, but they use the regionalized figure, not that average consumers get online. .
